Ok, since we've kind of switched our project theme around to the nature of reality in the world of scripted reality television and the tell-all nature of the internet, I've started working on my own kind of tangent project. Basically, the premise is that in the world of the internet (specifically facebook) you only exist in that which you decide to post/ reveal about yourself. So I've created an alter-ego (Real Meg McClure) and have created a facebook page for them, while deleting all information and stopping all activity of my actual facebook account (now 'Meg McClure') The question is: in the eyes of the internet (and I guess, therefore "the world" in general) is this alter-ego now more real than myself? Do they exist more than I do? (Obviously they don't physically, but in terms of the information they put out onto the internet, are they more "real" than someone who doesn't exist on the internet?-- does that even make sense?) So basically, this person is going to be my antithesis-- they love the things I hate, and have a very different manner of speaking and interacting with people, different everything that I can think of, probably verging on one of the more outrageous characters of a reality show. The question is, will the "world" (i.e. the internet) accept this persona as a valid, "real" individual? (A note: the point of this project is not to see whether or not my friends actually notice whether I've changed-- I just want to see if the larger world in general will accept this persona as a reality.)
This might be a little rambling-- I just wanted to give a general overview of what I wanted to do. Please don't tell people at school about this--I'm going to keep it up for a week or so and then switch back. Hopefully the result of this is something more interesting than just everyone getting mad at me for messing with them. I'll be blogging about what's going on this week.
